We’re launching a new and improved Qualia Life! Internally we’ve been calling this version Life 2.0, because, like software, where a new version builds on and improves an old version, we kept most of the formula the same, but made improvements to the Qualia Life you’ve been getting.
We think you are going to be as excited about this upgrade as we are. Here’s what’s changed and why.
1. More Trademarked Ingredients.
There are more branded ingredients—trademarked ingredients—in the new version of Qualia Life. The old version of Qualia Life included five trademarked ingredients on the label; new and improved Qualia Life has ten!
Trademarked ingredients have usually been clinically studied in humans. This makes them more expensive than non-trademarked (i.e., generic) ingredients—research costs money. But they can be worth it; sometimes they are just that much better.
Adding these additional, higher quality, branded ingredients is one of the ways the new Qualia Life delivers even more value to you.
2. We added a new ingredient called Puremidine™ spermidine.
In the longevity and biohacker communities, spermidine is best known for supporting autophagy. If you listen to health podcasts, you’ve no doubt heard of autophagy, the natural clean-up and recycling process cells and mitochondria use to keep themselves healthy.*
But spermidine does even more than just supporting autophagy; it also plays important functional roles in cellular growth, DNA stability, tissue growth and repair, and responding to stress.*
We think the science on spermidine has gotten a lot stronger since we originally created Qualia Life. And we believe its inclusion alone is a major upgrade to the formula, but we did not stop here.
3. We changed to an even more potent form of cinnamon extract, ProcynCi®.
When we created Qualia Life, we wanted to include a clinically studied cinnamon extract—cinnamon supports getting fuel (blood sugar specifically) into cells where it can be metabolized into energy. And we wanted the extract to be de-coumarated (i.e., very low in coumarin) because, while cinnamon is healthy, too much coumarin may not be.*
Delivering these twin goals—clinically studied for blood sugar support and de-coumarated—resulted in our sourcing a cinnamon extract called Cinnulin®: We included a 250 mg dose in the original version of Qualia Life, which was half of the 500 mg dose that has been used when Cinnulin® was given alone in human studies.*
While we viewed this dose as being additive with other ingredients in Qualia Life, we’ve been on the look out for a cinnamon extract that has been clinically studied at an even lower dose; an even stronger cinnamon extract so to speak. We found one.
ProcynCi® Cinnamon cassia bark extract is this new extract. It is clinically studied, de-coumarated, and a more potent extract (containing roughly twice the amount of important cinnamon polyphenols). The 250 mg dose of a cinnamon extract in Qualia Life is the studied dose of ProcynCi®. This means the new version of Qualia Life delivers even more cinnamon strength and benefits.*
4. We replaced ElevATP® (Ancient Peat and Apple Fruit Extract) with MLG-50™ Fulvic Mineral Powder.
ElevATP® is a great ingredient; we think MLG-50® is an even better fit in Qualia Life. To appreciate why, it’s important to understand what each is, and how they differ.
ElevATP® is a water extract of ancient peat combined with an apple extract. The water extraction process of the ancient peat concentrates the minerals and trace minerals, but removes everything else—think of it as just being the minerals from the ancient peat. The apple extract adds polyphenols.
What the makers of ElevATP® refer to as ancient peat, other people call lignite or humates or humic substances or ancient fossilized soil (these are the most common ways we’ve seen it but there are others). These are different names for the same thing—the decomposition and compression of plant matter (i.e., peat) that takes place over long periods of time.
The end result of this geological compression of peat is a substance with high amounts of fulvic acid, humic acids, trace minerals, organic acids, amino acids, and plant flavonoids. Unlike ElevATP®, which only includes the minerals from the ancient peat, MLG-50™ contains all of the compounds.
MLG-50™ fulvic mineral powder is produced from humic source materials (humates). It can be thought of as being a mineral powder (it contains 70+ trace minerals and electrolytes) with high fulvic acid content, with both being part of a fulvic mineral complex. Its fulvic acid content makes it similar to Shilajit.
MLG-50™ also contains organic acids, several of which—malic & succinic—are Krebs cycle intermediates, so are involved in cellular energy production. And it includes amino acids and 22 polyphenol flavonoids (it has its own naturally occurring polyphenols so there is no need to add some from apple).
Put simply, we feel strongly that MLG-50™ is a big upgrade; supplying everything ElevATP® does and a lot more. We’re excited in being able to offer it to you (and being able to take it ourselves).
5. We switched our source of Magnesium to Aquamin® Magnesium.
The amount of magnesium in Qualia Life is staying the same, but we’ve switched from magnesium bisglycinate to Aquamin® as the source. The bisglycinate form of magnesium supplied a low dose of glycine (344 mg), so, with this change, you’ll no longer see glycine on the label.
Some of you may recognize the name Aquamin®; it's the magnesium we use in our stress support product, Qualia Resilience. Teaser: It’s also the source of magnesium in the soon to be launched Qualia Synbiotic.
We made the change because, in addition to being a bioavailable source of magnesium, and being studied for supporting gut microbiota, Aquamin® also supplies 71 other minerals, trace minerals, and electrolytes, all of which are from ocean waters off the coast of Ireland.*
The role of magnesium in cell and mitochondrial health has been scientifically established for decades. Magnesium is used in enzymes that turn food into energy. And, ATP (i.e., cellular energy) occurs complexed with magnesium, so all the cellular work ATP does requires magnesium. Many other minerals, trace minerals, and electrolytes are also needed for cellular and mitochondrial functions. Science has been learning more about this and we expect this trend to continue.*
Multicellular organisms, our evolutionary ancient ancestors, emerged in the oceans. It makes intuitive sense that cells and mitochondria evolved to depend on the minerals, trace minerals, and electrolytes in the waters surrounding them. We switched to Aquamin® because it supplies these other compounds; magnesium bisglycinate did not.
6. We upgraded the Vitamin K2 (as menaquinone-7) to K2VITAL®.
The amount of Vitamin K2 (as menaquinone-7) has stayed the same but we upgraded the source to K2VITAL®, one of the most recognizable brands of vitamin K2 in the world.
We made this change because K2VITAL® has been extensively studied, is a high purity source of vitamin K2, and has been microencapsulated for stability (Vitamin K2 is notoriously unstable). The makers of it are continuing their commitment to research, with several ongoing human studies now underway using K2VITAL®.
The Vitamin K2 we had been sourcing was exceptional; the science behind K2VITAL® is even better.
7. We upgraded the Pomegranate Extract to Pomanox® and increased the dose.
We researched and sourced Pomanox® when we were developing Qualia Skin—you’ll see it on the Qualia Skin label. Pomanox® has been clinically studied to support skin health and other areas.*
Put simply, we think Pomanox® is a superior extract to the non-trademarked pomegranate extract we had been using in Qualia Life. And, while we were making the change of extracts, we increased the dose from 40 to 100 mg.
Pomanox® is produced from pomegranates cultivated in Mediterranean regions of Spain through sustainable farming, under strict quality control of the raw material and with a green and eco-friendly proprietary technology. It is a truly exceptional pomegranate extract.
Pomanox® contains concentrated amounts of punicalagins and punicalins. These compounds are metabolized by gut microbiota into urolithins. And urolithins have been getting more and more attention for how they support mitochondrial health. We increased the dose to add to the mitochondrial support found in Qualia Life.*
7. You’ll see Bio-Enhanced® R-Lipoic Acid on the new label.
One of the new trademarks you’ll see is Bio-Enhanced® R-Lipoic Acid. This is not an ingredient change. We’ve been using the same amount and source of R-Lipoic Acid since the very first batch of Qualia Life was produced. But we’d overlooked using the registered trademark, so we added it.
8. We switched from Betaine HCl to Betaine Anhydrous.
We switched from using Betaine HCl to Betaine Anhydrous (trimethylglycine). The amount of betaine (125 mg) in a dose of Qualia Life has stayed the same.
We made this change because we’ve been using Betaine Anhydrous (trimethylglycine) in Qualia Night (it simplifies inventory and ordering), and because it is the betaine (not what is stabilizing it) that is important to us.
9. We removed Calcium ß-Hydroxy-ß-Methylbutyratemonohydrate.
Calcium ß-Hydroxy-ß-Methylbutyratemonohydrate, often shortened to HMB, is most commonly used to support muscles. It’s been a favorite of body builders for decades.
Upgrading Qualia Life, adding new ingredients or increased amounts of an existing ingredient, meant we also had to free up some capsule space: Addition required subtraction. But should we reduce the amount of several things? Or what about removing just one? What’s the best path forward?
Our science team brainstormed on this, ultimately deciding that the best path forward for making the upgrades wanted was to remove one ingredient. Of all the ingredients in Qualia Life, HMB was the least relevant to the formula. We made several upgrades to the new and improved Qualia Life. Removing HMB made this possible.
