Can I stack Qualia Mitochondria+ with other Qualia products?

Yes you can stack Qualia Mitochondria+ with other Qualia formulations. 

When we designed Qualia Mitochondria+, we did so understanding people would take it with one of the other Qualia products. Because of this, we made sure that the formulations, when combined, wouldn’t be giving too much of any individual nutrient. We are not a “more is better” company when it comes to the formulation of our products. It was very important to us to make sure the amounts of every ingredient would stay within a safe range when this product was taken with Qualia.

While we’ve found that people often respond to Qualia Mind better when it’s taken without food, there’s a lot more flexibility on when you take Qualia Mitochondria+. The important thing is finding a routine that that works best for you.

How does Qualia Mitochondria+ work?

We’ve written a series of articles discussing how Qualia Mitochondria+ works in detail. But, in general, it works by helping our cells and mitochondria do more work, especially the types of tasks they tend to struggle to get to as we get older. When our cells and mitochondria can do more work, and get to all the important jobs we need them to do, we look, feel and function better.

Does Qualia Mitochondria+ work for everyone?

While it’s often implied that something will work for everybody, this does match the reality of complexity science or human individuality. A better assumption is to think in terms of response groupings. Exercise is a good example.

If we started a big group of people on the same exact exercise program, and followed how they respond over time, we’d find that some people got much more benefits than the overall group. These persons are called super-responders. Many people will have an average response. They’re responders. Some people will have either a less than average or no response (i.e., non-responders). And there’s likely to be a subset of persons who got injured. They were negative responders. This same type of grouping response reliably plays out when we test and iterate during our formulation process.

Response groups tend to follow a bell curve. One of our formulation goals is to shift the bell curve in a way that we end up with a high amount of super-responders (~33%) and an overall amount of super-responders and responders of about 80%. This leaves about 20% as non- and negative responders, with our goal being to have very few of this group being negative responders. Our testing of Qualia Mitochondria+ met this criteria. This product was not equal for everyone. About 1 out of 3 were super-responders. Almost half were responders. And, about 1 out of 5 were non-responders, with very few negative responders.

For someone who’s cells and mitochondria are already working at a high level, we wouldn’t expect them to notice as much as for someone whose cells and mitochondria are not. This is what we observed in our testing. In the subset of participants 35 and older, the percent of super-responders increased to about half, with almost all the rest being responders. So, in general, our testing to date has shown that persons in their mid-30’s and older seem to benefit more consistently and to higher amounts.

Why don’t you use nicotinamide ribose or nicotinamide mononucleotide?

When we first created Qualia Mitochondria+ (formerly Qualia Life), the company that supplies the patented form of Nicotinamide Riboside (NIAGEN®️) had decided they would not sell this ingredient to other companies.  

This changed recently, and we've now partnered with this supplier, offering NIAGEN®️ in our Qualia NAD+ formula. This formula takes the our complex systems science approach and applies it to making NAD+, in which NIAGEN®️ plays a very helpful role.

For people who wish to take Nicotinamide Riboside, Qualia NAD+ is a formula containing it. Qualia NAD+ also contains niacin (nicotinic acid), niacinamide (which are two additional NAD+ precursors), and 11 other cofactor ingredients that work together to support NAD+ production. 

Qualia Mitochondria+ also supplies excellent support for pathways and processes involved in metabolizing NAD+.* Qualia Mitochondria+ does not contain NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) because the FDA has determined that NMN is excluded from the definition of dietary supplement.

What should I expect when taking Qualia Mitochondria+?

Depending on health, age, and other factors, what you experience will vary. In the biohacker and quantified self communities, you’ll run across the acronym YMMV. This stands for “your mileage may vary.” It means that every person does not respond identically to the same thing. YMMV is seen with diet, exercise, sleep needs, and circadian preferences (i.e., some people are morning people; others are night people). It’s also seen with dietary supplements. Because of this, there’s a growing movement for what are called N-of-1 (or one person) experiments.

Not surprisingly, in our testing of Qualia Mitochondria+, we saw YMMV in action, when we look at the group as a whole (ranging in age from early 20’s to 70’s). Functional improvements individual people noticed varied. While most people noticed something, they did not all experience the same things.

About 6 out of 10 participants noticed higher energy and motivation levels. Close to the same number felt like they were better able to handle stress. Just over half felt a benefit in productivity … they were getting more meaningful work done than usual. For a few of them this was especially noticeable late in the day or in the evening, time periods when they would normally have exhausted their drive to be productive. Half of the group felt like the product allowed them to deal better with complex problems. About 4 out of 10 noticed a positive difference in their workouts. Almost one out of three people noticed an improvement in their sleep.

How soon will I notice something?

Qualia Mitochondria+ wasn’t designed to produce the type of immediate subjective response that our Qualia line of nootropics (Mind, Focus) are known for. Qualia Mitochondria+ is designed to give cells and mitochondria the nutritional support they need to work better. When they work better, we look, feel, and perform better … but this may take time.

Enhancing fundamental processes of cellular energy and mitochondrial performance is a slower process, because it gets to the roots of healthy aging, working from the ground up. In our testing, some people noticed some area of functional performance and/or subjective experience change almost immediately, many started to notice something within one week, but for most people it took a month of use.

It’s important to keep in mind that we don’t always feel a big difference as our cells and mitochondria slowly begin to perform better and produce more energy. Our senses are not as good at detecting slow, gradual enhancements as big, dramatic ones. It may be helpful to keep a journal of your experiences and how you are feeling over time so you can be more aware of those changes as they occur over time.

How should I get started with Qualia Mitochondria+?

A good strategy, when starting anything new, is to start slow and gradually working your way up. This takes advantage of the body’s adaptive capacities and minimizes chances of poor response. Exercise is a great example of this. When starting a new exercise routine, the tendency is to want to do a lot right away. But this increases chances of having very sore muscles or getting injured. So, it’s better to start conservatively and slowly do more as your body gets accustomed to the new routine.

This same principle, starting low and adding more gradually, can be applied to taking dietary supplements. Starting by doing less is done by taking 1-2 capsules a day for the first few days (three days is a good rule of thumb). Then gradually add 1-2 more capsules every few days till you reach the full dose. This gradual approach can be especially important for people who are: already taking a lot of other supplements, or tend to be more sensitive to dietary supplements or foods.

Do I need to take the full dose of Qualia Mitochondria+?

In general, we recommend taking the full dose. The full dose provides the studied amounts of many of the ingredients (this is an important part of being able to make accurate structure/function claims) and is the dose we designed the formulation to deliver and have studied in our testing.

Feel free to adjust the dose as needed, whether this is over time or because of sensitivity to dietary supplements, in general, or to this formulation. Because of biochemical individuality and many other factors, we don’t all respond the same way to the same ingredients or doses. We don’t all have the same objectives or goals in mind. So, it’s perfectly fine to experiment with taking a lower dose that works best for you and your chemistry.

How should I take Qualia Mitochondria+?

How much water should I drink with Qualia Mitochondria+.?

We recommend drinking Qualia Mitochondria+ with water and drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day, especially during the first week. One of the ingredients—creatine (as tricreatine malate)—is believed to pull water into cells. Because of this, it’s important to stay hydrated while taking Qualia Mitochondria+..

Should I take Qualia Mitochondria+ with or without food?

In general, we recommend taking Qualia Life with food. Some of the ingredients are fat-soluble, so taking them with food, especially if it contains at least a small amount of fat or oil, would be expected to help with absorption. It’s fine to take it a bit before eating the food (or drinking a smoothie), in the middle, or a bit after eating. Digestion doesn’t happen all at once.

Is it OK to take Qualia Mitochondria+ in a fasted state?

We've had lots of people take Qualia Mitochondria+ in the morning without food. Only a few of the ingredients are fat-soluble (CoQ10 and Vitamin K2) and would be expected to be better absorbed with fat, but most of the ingredients won't be impacted. If you are drinking Bulletproof coffee in the morning, taking Qualia Mitochondria+ with or soon after that would give you plenty of fat for better absorbing the CoQ10 as an example. And, we'd consider it completely fine to take earlier in the day without food if that's more convenient for you.

What time of day Is best to take Qualia Mitochondria+?

We recommend taking Qualia Mitochondria+ in the morning as opposed to dinner because things taken at dinner, in our experience, have a much more individual impact on sleep, while taking them in the morning seems to be more forgiving and they don't disrupt sleep (sleep quality has improved for quite a few people taking Qualia Mitochondria+ in the morning or lunch but we haven't studied this for dinner dosing).
