The Science Behind Qualia Vision

Being fully aware of the hurdles of screen time—we spend as much time looking at screens as anyone else—we wanted to create a product that would support and protect the health, resistance, and resilience of the visual system. We designed Qualia Vision to help our eyes cope with the challenges of the digital age. We aimed to create a product that would support eye health, visual performance, and resistance to visual fatigue and eye strain.

Qualia Vision is designed to support healthy vision with a main focus on screen time protection. Qualia Vision is designed especially for people of all ages who spend hours a day in front of devices with screens (e.g., smartphones, tablets, computers, TVs, video games, e-book readers, etc) and want protection from the eye stress that using these devices can cause.

To design Qualia Vision, we studied eye structure and function, the physiology of the visual system, and why and how screens affect visual performance and health to determine targets for intervention. We then chose a set of ingredients that could support visual health and performance, the physiological processes that are most affected by screen stress, and the mechanisms that are most relevant to the support of eye protection from screen time stress. We did so following the same formulation philosophy and dosing principles that have guided the design of all our products.

We ended up with nine ingredients that provide comprehensive vision support through a number of complementary and synergistic mechanisms:

What makes Qualia Vision Different?

Most vision supplements focus on aging eyes.

Qualia Vision was formulated to support eye health in old eyes and in young eyes. Because in today’s world, eyes of all ages are stressed by digital eye strain and need extra support!

Most vision products only emphasize a part of the eye, usually the macula.

Qualia Vision supports the entire visual system, providing plant-based pigments, vision super fruits and spices, and eye-essential vitamin and amino acid support.

Many vision products mix carotenoids that can’t get into the eye (e.g., beta-carotene), with the much more important ones that can—lutein, zeaxanthin, meso-zeaxanthin, astaxanthin.

Qualia Vision only supplies carotenoids that can cross the blood-retina barrier.

Most vision products have one, occasionally two, sources of carotenoids that can get into the eye 

Qualia Vision has 4 carotenoid sources. This allows for a broader range of antioxidant support, light absorption, and protection from blue light.

Most leading vision products contain no super fruits. 

Qualia Vision contains 3 vision superfruits and includes them in the amounts needed to get the vision benefits these superfruits have to offer.

Lutemax® 2020

Lutemax® 2020 supplies the three antioxidant pigments—lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin—used by the macula to filter blue light and protect retina tissue.

MirtoSelect® Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) Fruit Extract

MirtoSelect® bilberry is a vision superfruit that supports ocular blood flow, promotes recovery of eye muscles, comforts the eye surface, and provides relief from eye fatigue.

AstaPure® Haematococcus pluvialis Microalgae Extract (3% astaxanthin)

AstaPure® is a natural source of astaxanthin, an eye antioxidant that supports eye muscle stamina & recovery, blood flow to the eyes, and defenses against blue light.

Saffron Stigma Extract

Saffron is the world’s most expensive spice, contains a variety of eye-healthy carotenoids, and supports macula health, blue light resistance, and retina function.

Goji (Lycium barbarum) Fruit Juice Extract

Goji fruit is a Traditional Chinese Medicine eye tonic used to nourish the eyes and promote healthy vision that supports healthy retina and photoreceptor function.

Amla (Emblica officinalis) Fruit Extract

Amla fruit is an Ayurvedic eye tonic that supports lens health and is believed to preserve eyesight, promote eye health, and relieve eye fatigue.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) Root Extract

Ginger is a bioenhancer (it enhances the bioavailability of carotenoids) with antioxidant benefits that supports the healthy function of the retina and lens.

Taurine

Taurine is the most abundant amino acid in the retina, where it acts as an antioxidant and is essential for the function of the photoreceptor layer that captures light.

Vitamin B12 (as methylcobalamin)

Methylcobalamin (an active form of vitamin B12) is critical for the healthy function of the optic nerve that transfers information between the eye and brain.
